I have been making a conscious effort to celebrate holidays with more intention. Holidays come and go so quickly! Marking them with celebration helps create a sense of purpose in the year. So this St. Patrick’s Day, I decided to read a few of the Irish culture books in my mother’s library.
Fiona’s Lace by Patricia Polacco details a story from the author’s family history. During a time of economic hardship, an Irish family immigrates to America, but they hold tight to their family culture. The eldest daughter, Fiona, carries on the family tradition of crafting fine lace. When the two girls are separated from their parents in the Great Chicago Fire, they turn to their own family lore to lead the family back together.
The girls and I enjoyed reading this story together. Although it has nothing to do with Saint Patrick, it was a great way to celebrate family and learn more about Irish immigration. I also enjoy the opportunity to discuss our own family history! The theme of the story, as stated by the mother, resonates deeply:
“In your heart your true home resides, and it will always be with you as long as you remember those you love.”
Fiona’s Lace is a wonderful exploration of the realities of immigration, Irish culture and what it means to be a family. Vivid illustrations and genuine storytelling will delight even the youngest readers.

Some questions to discuss with children:
What is your favorite family story?
Did our ancestors emigrate? If so, where did they emigrate from?
Have you ever had to be brave? What happened?
