Mouse Paint Review/Activity

Mouse Paint by Ellen Walsh tells the story of three white mice hiding from a cat on a white piece of paper. Upon seeing three jars of paint, the mice decide to each paint themselves a primary color– red, yellow, or blue. Color-mixing shenanigans ensue!

This book is a lovely introduction to color theory. It takes approximately two minutes to read from start to finish, and is simple enough that two-year-old Millie can read it back to me almost exactly. It’s still enjoyable to adult readers, but the main reason I chose to review Mouse Paint was to introduce color theory and maximize Easter egg enjoyment.

Because we had guests over to dye eggs, I did a simple food coloring activity with just Millie beforehand. We read the story and talked about which colors the mice mixed while we dropped food coloring into bowls of water (only one of which spilled!) Although it’s certainly not rocket science, it was a fun activity to introduce important concepts and gain hands-on experience with art, science and literature.
