Ants Mini Study

In our family, we try to follow the kids’ interests and explore whatever topics they’re curious about. Ants are out in full force right now, and Millie is fascinated by them. So, last week we decided to do a mini study and learn more about these tiny little guys.

To begin, we read the chapters of The Storybook of Science by Jean Henri Fabre that deal with ants. The Storybook of Science is so engaging, and as a mom I personally loved reading all about how ants build their own cities and can even ‘milk’ plant lice like little farmers. We accompanied this by looking at a cross section of the underground section of an ant hill.

On another morning, Millie and her dad painted pictures of ants (with plenty of artistic license.)

Throughout the week we spent a lot of time just watching ants, following their trails and observing the way they move. We even found an anthill to watch. After finding the anthill, I found a video by the BBC so we could take a closer look at ants and how they work together.

One of my favorite parts about ‘school’ at this age is that it’s easy to follow my child’s interests. We can do whatever we want, essentially. I can tailor our lessons to the attention span Millie has on any particular day and allow for natural curiosity to guide the time we spend together.
