This month, Well-Educated Heart suggests studying Africa, African-American history, Ancient Egypt and Animals. Because my children are very young, rather than emphasizing history I have chosen to focus on folktales and stories again. Well-Educated Heart also suggests studying Abraham Lincoln and slavery in America, but again, my children are young. I’d rather establish a love of African culture rater than emphasizing Africans merely as people who were previously held as slaves– the beauty of Well-Educated Heart, and more especially homeschooling, is that I can teach my kids according to their needs at each stage.
Africa/Egypt

This is the selection of books we chose to study Africa this month. My favorite so far was Zzzzng! Zzzng! Zzzng!, a cute story about how the mosquito began to bite humans. We have had a lot of fun learning new stories together!
One of our friends is from Ghana, so I plan to talk with him about his home and look up some pictures of Ghana.
This month we included Duplos in our toy rotation, and have been enjoying building with those. This week I’m going to watch a video about the pyramids with the kids and work together to build our own pyramid.
I have also included a couple African meals in our dinner rotations this month.
Animals

Again, I chose a collection of primarily fiction stories for our animal study this month. In addition to these stories, I have had the opportunity to have some real-life experience with animals, including squirrels in the yard, feeding my brother-in-law’s chinchilla and rabbit, and visiting a family friend’s sheep farm (Millie loved letting a newborn lamb suck on her finger!)
Before the end of the month, I hope to visit the local zoo. This winter has been so hard that the zoo delayed opening, but in the meantime we have been playing zoo with our toy animals and talking about all the ways zookeepers take care of animals.
Have you been following the WEH rotation? What does your homeschool look like this month?
